Mitsubishi Electric has forged a historic defense industry partnership, marking the first collaboration between a Japanese company and a foreign government.
The agreement with Australia's Defence Science and Technology Group aims to combine Mitsubishi Electric's electronic and optical system expertise with Australia's advanced laser technology to enhance the survivability and surveillance capabilities of Australian military assets.
Contract details remain undisclosed, but the work will be carried out by Mitsubishi Electric's Australian subsidiary, bypassing Japan's Defense Ministry in a new business model to expand the customer base through public-private partnerships.
This collaboration coincides with Tokyo and Canberra's efforts to strengthen defense ties amid concerns over China's influence in the Indo-Pacific, underpinned by the Reciprocal Access Agreement. Japan and Australia are also exploring increased coordination and interoperability, potentially involving rotational deployments of fighter jets.
Additionally, Tokyo is establishing security clearance systems to facilitate closer defense ties with partners, including Australia and the "Five Eyes" intelligence alliance.
